Crown Reductions in Horley, Banstead, Purley and the Surrounding Areas

A crown reduction takes height and spread off a tree while keeping its natural shape and its health - the skilled alternative to felling when a tree has simply outgrown its space. We reduce and thin trees across Horley, Banstead, Purley and the surrounding villages.

From a light thin to a hard reduction, every cut is made to the right growth point so the tree recovers cleanly - a world away from felling or topping. Call 07519 952330 for a free quote, or send us a photo on WhatsApp and we will price it from that.

Reductions Done Right

Whatever the tree, we can bring it back into shape. With over 20 years of experience, our tree surgeons reduce and thin trees of every size, cutting to the right growth points so the tree keeps its natural form and stays healthy.

Whether it has outgrown the garden, started blocking the light or grown too close to the house, a careful reduction sorts it without losing the tree.

Why reduce a tree rather than fell it?

Felling is final. A crown reduction keeps the tree you have - the shade, the screening, the wildlife and the value it adds to the garden - while solving the problem that made you call: a tree grown too tall, too wide, too close to the house, or one throwing the whole garden into shade. It is the option most people actually want once they know it exists.

A well-judged reduction also makes a tree safer. Taking height and spread off reduces the wind-sail the crown catches and the leverage on the roots and stem, which matters on exposed plots and with tall, top-heavy species. Cut to the right growth points it is far kinder than topping, and it is the bulk of our skilled tree work.

How a crown reduction works

We start by agreeing how much to take off - usually described as a percentage of the crown, kept to what the species will comfortably tolerate. Then we climb and rig, working around the tree and cutting each branch back to a suitable growth point so the finished shape looks natural, not butchered, and the tree can seal the cuts and regrow cleanly.

Everything is lowered or dropped safely, the brash is chipped and the timber cut into logs, and the garden is cleared before we leave. On big or awkward trees we bring the tracked lift where a climb is not the safe option.

Crown reductions: your questions answered

How much does a crown reduction cost?

It depends on the size and species of the tree, how much you want taken off and how easy it is to reach, so we price each job on site rather than guess. Reductions are skilled, time-consuming work, but because we climb and rig wherever we can rather than hire in expensive access, our quotes stay keen. Quotes are free and without obligation.

Crown reduction or pollarding - which do I need?

A crown reduction keeps the tree's natural shape, taking the whole crown back by a set amount to suitable growth points. Pollarding is harder, cutting back to a framework of main limbs for a very different, formal look. Most gardens want a reduction, and we will tell you honestly which suits your tree and what it will tolerate.

Will reducing my tree harm it?

Not when it is done properly. We reduce to the right growth points and never 'top' a tree, which is what causes decay and weak, dangerous regrowth. A sensible reduction, usually no more than 20 to 30% of the crown, takes weight and wind-sail off the tree, lowers the risk in high winds and leaves it healthy and in shape.

Do I need permission for a crown reduction?

Sometimes. If your tree has a Tree Preservation Order or sits in a conservation area, the council needs notice before any work. We check the status of your tree before we quote and handle the application for you, so nothing is cut without the right consent in place.
