Stump Grinding in Horley, Banstead, Purley and the Surrounding Areas

An old stump is more than an eyesore. It trips people up, sends up suckers, harbours honey fungus and gets in the way of the lawn, the new fence or the patio you actually want there. Our stump grinding service takes it out below ground level so the space is yours again, across Horley, Banstead, Purley and the surrounding villages.

We grind stumps left by our own tree removals and ones other people left behind years ago. Call 07519 952330 for a free quote, or send us a photo on WhatsApp and we will price it from that.

Why grind a stump rather than leave it?

Stumps rarely rot quietly. Many species, especially willow, poplar, sycamore and most conifers, keep sending up shoots for years, and a dead stump in damp ground is an open invitation to honey fungus, which spreads to healthy trees and shrubs nearby. Above ground it is a trip hazard, a mower obstacle and a permanent dead spot in the lawn. Grinding removes all of that in a morning.

Digging a stump out by hand is brutal work and leaves a crater. Chemical stump killers are slow and unreliable. Grinding is quick, controlled and leaves the ground level, which is why it is the standard way to finish a tree removal properly.

How stump grinding works

A stump grinder is a powered cutting wheel that chews the stump into chippings, working across the top and down into the root plate. We grind to the depth the site needs, clear the chippings or leave them as mulch, and backfill so the ground is level. Most domestic stumps take under an hour once we are set up; large or multi-stem stumps take longer, and we will say so at quote stage.

Before starting we check for services (pipes, cables, drains) near the stump and protect nearby paving, lawn and beds. Everything is tidied before we leave.

Stump grinding: your questions answered

How deep do you grind a stump?

Well below the surface, typically 150 to 300mm down, and deeper where you plan to lay a path or plant in the same spot. That takes out the stump and the main root plate, which is what stops regrowth and gives you clean ground to work with afterwards.

Can you grind a stump with limited access?

Usually, yes. Our grinders are compact enough to get through a standard garden gate and along side passages, and they work on slopes and in tight corners where a bigger machine could not go. If access is genuinely impossible we will tell you, and offer the alternatives.

What is left after stump grinding?

A pile of chippings mixed with soil where the stump was. We can leave them for you to use as mulch or take them away and leave the hole backfilled and levelled, ready for turf, planting or paving. Tell us which you would prefer when we quote and we will price it in.
